Cancelled Air Nostrum flight — refund and compensation rules
In the event of a cancelled Air Nostrum flight and depending on the reason behind the cancellation, you might be entitled to a ticket refund, compensation of up to £520, or both.
When can I claim compensation for a cancelled Air Nostrum flight?
If your Air Nostrum flight was cancelled fewer than 14 days before the scheduled departure of your flight, you could claim cancelled flight compensation.
However, sometimes the cancellation is due to the so-called “extraordinary circumstances”. If this is the case, you may not be eligible for compensation.
When can I claim a refund for my cancelled Air Nostrum flight?
You can ask Air Nostrum for a full refund of your flight if:
Your flight was cancelled, and you did not take an alternative flight offered by the airline, OR,
You were not offered an alternative flight at all
Cancellation notice | Alternative flight | Compensation |
---|---|---|
Fewer than 7 days in advance | Departs 1h+ earlier or arrived 2h+ later | Yes |
7-14 days in advance | Departs 2h+ earlier or arrived 4h+ later | Yes |
Fewer than 14 days in advance | No alternative flight offered | Yes + refund |
Air Nostrum is offering me a travel voucher instead of a refund — should I accept it?
We advise against accepting a travel voucher instead of a refund. Here is why:
Accepting a travel voucher forces you to fly with the same airline in the future. Also, the airline usually assigns a deadline to use the voucher.
If the airline declares bankruptcy, you might no longer be able to convert your voucher into a cash refund — in other words, your money will be lost.
Air Nostrum overbooked flight — get a refund, compensation and the right to care!
Overbooked flights happen more often than you could think! Airlines frequently sell more tickets than there are seats on the plane, and if they can't find enough volunteers to give up their reservations, people may be denied boarding against their will.

I was flying with Air Nostrum to a non-EU country. Can I still claim compensation?
Air Nostrum is an airline headquartered in Spain and, therefore, in the European Union. Because of this, EU261 applies to all overbooked, cancelled and delayed Air Nostrum flights.
However, note that the situation might differ if flying with a non-EU/non-UK airline. See the table below for details.
Extraordinary circumstances — can Air Nostrum deny me compensation?
If Air Nostrum was not responsible for the delay, cancellation or denied boarding, they can deny your claim for flight compensation. Those situations are referred to as Extraordinary Circumstances.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of the most common extraordinary circumstances:
Bad weather conditions, such as thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.
A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry (for example, a strike of air traffic control workers at a specific airport).
However, a strike of the airline's crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!
Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.
Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
An ill or unruly passenger.
Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
Airlines sometimes claim that extraordinary circumstances occurred when they did not! They do so to avoid having to pay out flight compensation to passengers.
