Your rights in the event of a delayed or cancelled Austrian Airlines flight
Your rights as an air passenger are protected when you fly with Austrian Airlines under EU Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004, also known as EU261. It states that if your flight is delayed or cancelled, you may be entitled to flight compensation.
Were you flying from or to the United Kingdom with Austrian Airlines? In that case, the 'The Air Passenger Rights and Air Travel Organisers' Licensing (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019' protects your rights. It's the British version of EU261, adopted by the UK after Brexit.
Was your Austrian Airlines flight delayed? If you arrived at your final destination at least 3 hours late, you are probably eligible for flight compensation.
Was your Austrian Airlines flight cancelled? If you did not take an alternative flight offered by the airline, you are entitled to a refund. Additionally, if the flight was cancelled with less than 14 days to go before departure, you might be able to claim for cancelled Austrian Airlines flight compensation.
Regardless of the flight disruption or its cause, airlines are responsible for providing passengers with special assistance, known as the "right to care.” This includes: food and beverage vouchers, communication services, and, if it calls for it, accommodations including transportation. You can claim for those expenses at the airline’s service desk at the airport, if the airline refuses to give you a voucher, just go ahead and purchase what you need — they will have to pay you back those expenses (as long as they are within reason).
Warning: If your flight was delayed or cancelled due to an "extraordinary circumstance," you will not be entitled to flight compensation because the airline must be liable for the flight disruption in order to compensate passengers.
Hold the airline accountable and get up to £520 in compensation.
You can claim for flights from up to 6 years ago.
Claim nowAustrian Airlines compensation for cancelled flight
Depending on the circumstances, you may be entitled to a ticket refund, compensation of up to £520, or both if your Austrian Airlines flight was cancelled.
When can I claim compensation for my cancelled Austrian Airlines flight?
If your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before the scheduled departure date, you may be eligible for flight compensation.
You must also consider extraordinary circumstances, such as bad weather, political circumstances or all events out of the airline’s control— if these extraordinary circumstances apply to your flight disruption, you may be ineligible for compensation.
When can I claim a refund for my cancelled Austrian Airlines flight?
If your flight was cancelled and you did not take an alternative flight offered by the airline, you may be eligible for an Austrian Airlines ticket refund. If you were not offered an alternative flight, you also can claim a ticket refund.
Can I get flight compensation if I cancel my Austrian Airlines flight?
If you decide on your own accord to cancel your Austrian Airlines flight, you should be aware that it might disqualify you from receiving flight compensation under EU and British air passenger rights regulations. For further information on Austrian Airlines’ refund and compensation policies, please browse their website or reach out to their customer service.
Austrian Airlines missed connection flight due to delay or cancellation
In accordance with EU and British air passengers rights laws, if both flights were booked under the same reservation and the delay or cancellation falls under the mentioned criteria, you could be entitled to compensation and/or a ticket refund.
Should I accept a travel voucher from Austrian Airlines instead of a refund?
We do not advise accepting a travel voucher instead of a monetary refund. The most important reasons for that are:
Accepting a travel voucher binds you to fly with the same airline again. In addition, the airline usually assigns a strict time limit for redeeming the voucher.
If the airline declares bankruptcy, you may be unable to convert your voucher into a cash refund — in other words, your money will be forfeited.

Claim nowDenied boarding because of an overbooked Austrian Airlines flight? Get a refund, compensation and more
Overbooking is happening more than you could think! Airlines frequently sell more tickets than there are seats on the plane, and if they can't find enough volunteers to give up their reservations, people may be denied boarding against their will.

I was flying to a non-EU country with Austrian Airlines. Can I still claim flight compensation?
Yes, you can. Austrian Airlines is an Austrian airline that operates within the European Union. As a result, EU261 applies to all Austrian Airlines flights that are delayed or cancelled.
However, if you were flying with a non-EU/non-UK airline, the situation might be different. Details can be found in the table below.
Type of flight | Example | Compensation |
---|---|---|
Flying with a British carrier | Tokyo to London with British Airways | Yes |
Flying with a EU carrier | Amsterdam to London with KLM | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier from the UK | London to Tokyo with Japan Airlines | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier to the UK | Tokyo to London with Japan Airlines | No |
Check your Austrian Airlines flight status
You may confirm the status of your Austrian Airlines flight by visiting the airline's or the airport's website. By entering your flight information, you will receive real-time updates of any changes, delays, or cancellations, keeping you up to speed on the details of your journey.
How much Austrian Airlines compensation can I get for a delayed or cancelled flight?
The amount of compensation depends on the flight distance. Keep in mind the amounts are per passenger.
Distance of your flight | Compensation |
---|---|
Flights shorter than 1,500 km | Get £220 per passenger |
Flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km | Get £350 per passenger |
Flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU | Get £350 per passenger |
Flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU | Get £520 per passenger |
Extraordinary circumstances — can Austrian Airlines deny me compensation?
We call extraordinary circumstances situations in which the airline is not to blame for the delay or cancellation. If any of the following conditions apply to your Austrian Airlines flight delay or cancellation, you may be ineligible for flight compensation:
Bad weather conditions, such as thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.
A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry (for example, a strike of air traffic control workers at a specific airport).
However, a strike of the airline's crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!
Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.
Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
An ill or unruly passenger.
Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
You should be aware, however, that airlines sometimes claim that extraordinary circumstances occurred when they did not! They do so in the hope of avoiding paying out flight compensation to passengers.
