Depending on the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of your Luxair flight, you may be entitled to a ticket refund, compensation of up to £520, or both.

When can I claim compensation for a cancelled Luxair flight?

If your flight was cancelled fewer than 14 days before the scheduled departure date, you may be eligible for flight compensation.

You must also consider extraordinary circumstances, such as a natural disaster that prevents the flight from taking off — if these unusual circumstances apply to your flight, you may be ineligible for compensation.

When can I claim a refund for my cancelled Luxair flight?

If your flight was cancelled and you did not take the airline's alternative flight, you may be eligible for a Luxair ticket refund. You are also entitled to a ticket refund if you were not offered an alternative flight.

Luxair is offering me a travel voucher instead of a refund — should I accept it?

We do not advise accepting a travel voucher in lieu of a refund. This is for two main reasons:

1. Accepting a travel voucher binds you to fly with the same airline again. In addition, the airline usually assigns a time limit for redeeming the voucher.

2. If the airline declares bankruptcy, you may be unable to convert your voucher into a cash refund — in other words, your money will be lost.

I was flying with Luxair to a non-EU country. Can I still claim compensation?

Yes!

Even though Luxair mainly offers flights within the European Union, with LuxairTours, the airline operates on a larger scale to Africa and the Middle East.

Luxair is a Luxembourg airline and therefore is headquartered in Europe. As a result, EU261 applies to all Luxair flights that are delayed or cancelled.

Extraordinary circumstances — can Luxair deny me compensation?

We call extraordinary circumstances situations in which the airline is not the party to blame for the delay or cancellation of your flight. If any of the following conditions apply to your Luxair flight delay or cancellation, you may be ineligible for flight compensation (n.b. this list is non-exhaustive):

• Bad weather conditions, such as thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.

• A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry (for example, a strike of air traffic control workers at a specific airport).

  However, a strike of the airline's crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!

• Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.

• Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.

• A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.

• An ill or unruly passenger.

• Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
