Your rights in the event of a delayed or cancelled PLAY airlines flight
While Iceland is not part of the European Union, the country is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA). This means that the flights to and from Iceland fall under the European Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004, also called the Flight Compensation Regulation. Additionally, the rights of British passengers are covered by the 'The Air Passenger Rights and Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019’ — a British version of the EU regulation, adopted after Brexit. Under the aforementioned regulations, passengers have the right to refund and compensation when it comes to selected cancelled and delayed flights to and from Iceland.
Was your PLAY airlines flight delayed? If the flight was delayed for over 3 hours and the delay was the airline’s fault, you can claim up to £520 in PLAY airlines flight compensation.
Was your PLAY airlines flight cancelled? If you decided not to take the alternative flight offered by the airline, you can claim a full monetary refund. Additionally, if PLAY announced the flight cancellation fewer than 14 days prior to departure, you might be also entitled to compensation.
Airlines must provide passengers with special assistance, or the "right to care," regardless of the cause of the delay. Transportation, lodging, and food and drink are all included in the redemption process for the vouchers. You can pick up the vouchers at the airline service counter at the airport. If the service desk staff won't give you the vouchers, buy what you need nonetheless because the airline is required by law to reimburse your charges (as long as they are justified).
If your flight was cancelled or delayed because of an "extraordinary circumstance," you cannot file a claim for flight compensation. Customers are only entitled to compensation when the airline is fully to blame for the flight's delay or cancellation.
I am travelling outside of the UK/EU with PLAY airlines. Am I still eligible for compensation?
Yes, you can.
As Iceland is a member of the European Economic Area, all PLAY flights are covered by the European flight compensation regulations.
However, it’s worth remembering that the rules are different for flights with airlines that are not headquartered in the EU/EEA or in the UK
Type of flight | Example | Compensation |
---|---|---|
Flying with a British carrier | Tokyo to London with British Airways | Yes |
Flying with a EU carrier | Amsterdam to London with KLM | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier from the UK | London to Tokyo with Japan Airlines | Yes |
Flying with a non-UK/non-EU carrier to the UK | Tokyo to London with Japan Airlines | No |

How much PLAY airlines compensation can I get for a delayed or cancelled flight?
When it comes to a delayed flight between Iceland and the UK or Europe, you will most likely be eligible for £350.
However, if you are flying with PLAY to the United States and you arrive at your destination at least 3 hours late, you can claim £520.
The exact European and British regulations regarding PLAY flight compensation are as follows:
*Including Iceland, as — despite not being part of the EU — the country is a member of the EEA (European Economic Area).
Distance of your flight | Compensation |
---|---|
Flights shorter than 1,500 km | Get £220 per passenger |
Flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km | Get £350 per passenger |
Flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU | Get £350 per passenger |
Flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU | Get £520 per passenger |
Extraordinary circumstances — can PLAY airlines deny me compensation?
Bad weather, for example thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.
A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry.
HOWEVER! A strike of a specific airline/their crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!
Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.
Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
An ill or unruly passenger.
Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
However, it’s worth noting that some airlines often reject even the valid claims on the basis of extraordinary circumstances. This happens especially often to passengers who decide to claim their flight compensation individually, without the help of a legal representative experienced in the matter of air passenger rights.
