What is an ETA, and Who Needs It?
Thursday, January 16, 2025
Starting in 2025, the UK is introducing a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement for many travelers. Whether you're planning a short visit, passing through the UK on your way to another destination, or staying longer, it’s essential to know whether you’ll need an ETA.
What is an ETA, and Who Needs It?
An ETA is a pre-travel authorization required for visitors to the UK who don’t need a visa for short stays and who don’t already hold UK immigration status. The rollout is as follows:
- Non-Europeans: Required to have an ETA starting January 8, 2025.
- Europeans: Required to have an ETA starting April 2, 2025, with applications opening on March 5, 2025.
This includes travelers who are only transiting through the UK, as all non-British and non-Irish citizens will need permission to travel in advance.
Does this apply to transit passengers?
Yes. Even if you’re just transferring flights in the UK and not entering the country, you’ll likely need an ETA unless you already hold UK immigration status or are a British or Irish citizen.
How to apply for an ETA
Eligible travelers can apply using the UK ETA app (App Store, Google Play) or through GOV.UK if they don’t have access to a smartphone. The process is designed to be quick, with most decisions made within 3 days.
ETA vs ESTA: What’s the difference?
Travelers familiar with the ESTA system for the United States may wonder how the UK’s ETA compares. Here are some key similarities and differences:
Feature | UK ETA | US ESTA |
Purpose | Permission for non-visa travelers to visit or transit | Permission for non-visa travelers to visit or transit |
Countries Covered | Nationals from countries who do not need a visa for short stays | Nationals from Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries |
Application Platform | UK ETA app or GOV.UK | ESTA website |
Processing Time | Most applications decided within 3 days | Typically decided within 72 hours |
Duration of Validity | 2 years or until passport expiration | Two years or until passport expiration |
Cost | £10 GBP | $21 USD |
Mandatory for Transit? | Yes | Yes |
Both systems are aimed at enhancing security and ensuring compliance with immigration policies, but travelers should note that requirements and processes are unique to each country.
Why do I need an ETA?
The ETA system enhances security, replaces physical immigration documents with digital records, and simplifies travel by enabling visitors to manage their data online. This reduces the risk of lost or stolen documents while ensuring compliance with UK travel regulations.
Plan Ahead for 2025
If you're traveling to or through the UK from April 2025 and don’t need a visa for short stays, make sure to check your ETA requirements well in advance. Applying early will ensure a smooth journey, whether you’re visiting or just passing through.
