How much compensation can I receive for my delayed or cancelled London flight?
You can get London delayed or cancelled flight compensation if your flight was delayed by more than 3 hours upon arrival or if the cancellation of your London flight was announced less than 14 days before departure. Note that the airline must also be responsible for the flight disruption.
Under British and EU regulations, passengers may be entitled to compensation if their flight from London is delayed or cancelled. The amount of compensation depends on the distance of the flight, as well as the length of the delay or cancellation.
See the table below for more information:
Distance of your flight | Compensation |
---|---|
Flights shorter than 1,500 km | Get £220 per passenger |
Flight between 1,500 and 3,500 km | Get £350 per passenger |
Flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU | Get £350 per passenger |
Flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU | Get £520 per passenger |
Note that if your flight is delayed or cancelled, the airline owes you special assistance. This includes food and beverage vouchers, communication, transportation and if needed hotels. You can claim those vouchers directly at the airline’s service desk at the airport. If the airline doesn’t provide you with vouchers, you can buy what you need and keep the receipts — the airline will have to reimburse you.

Ask for the refund of your flight from London
When your [destination] flight is cancelled, you can also get the full refund of your ticket. This is different from the compensation. London flight compensation in the event of a cancelled flight is offered by the airline to the passengers when they are at fault for the cancellation and that they need to compensate passengers. However, the refund is something that all passengers can get, as long as they did not fly with the airline in the end.
In addition to compensation, passengers whose flights from London are cancelled may be entitled to a refund of their ticket price.
To get a full refund for your cancelled London flight, you must meet the criteria given below:
No alternative flight was provided by the airline, OR,
You did not take the airline's offer to take the alternative flight.

Were you offered a voucher for your cancelled flight from London? Here’s what you should know
Our legal experts strongly advise you to refuse the voucher offered by the airline. While accepting a voucher may seem like a convenient option, it's important to understand the terms and conditions of the voucher
In many cases, vouchers come with restrictions or limitations that may make them less valuable than compensation or a refund. For example, vouchers may be subject to expiration dates, blackout dates, or restrictions on destinations. On top of this, if the airline goes bankrupt, it is unlikely that you can get your money back.

Extraordinary circumstances disrupted my London flight — can the airline really deny my compensation claim?
If your London flight was delayed or cancelled due to "extraordinary circumstances," the airline is not required to pay compensation under British and EU regulations. Extraordinary circumstances are events that are beyond the airline's control and could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken.
Examples of extraordinary circumstances are as follows:
Bad weather conditions, such as thick fog, heavy rain, or thunderstorms.
A strike, most often specifically within the aviation industry (for example, a strike of air traffic control workers at a specific airport).
However, a strike of the airline's crew is not considered an extraordinary circumstance!
Political circumstances, such as a terrorist attack or general security risk due to political unrest.
Natural disasters, including volcanic eruptions and hurricanes.
A collision between the aircraft and birds or other foreign objects.
An ill or unruly passenger.
Flight delays caused by the airport staff, such as extraordinarily long queues to security checks.
