Dutch airports go green

Royal Schiphol Group has revealed plans to make their airports operate completely on renewable energy. From the 1^st of January 2018, the Dutch energy provider Eneco will be providing the company’s different airports with sustainable energy.

What this therefore means is that Amsterdam Schiphol, Rotterdam Airport, The Hague Airport, Eindhoven Airport and Lelystad Airport, will all be sustainably powered by the beginning of next year.

Although that in itself is rather grand news, this is the first step in a greater scheme. The new deal is specifically focused on the creation of new wind farms which will function exclusively on behalf of the Royal Schiphol Group. As these will not be operational until 2020, the airports will be running on other green sources in the meantime.

Jos Nijhuis, President and CEO of Royal Schiphol Group, states:  “For our new energy contract, we wanted nothing but sustainable power generated in the Netherlands. After all, one thing is certain: aviation can and must be made more sustainable.”
