300+ cancelled flights by Ryanair
Tuesday, July 24, 2018
The Irish low-cost airline Ryanair is facing a personnel strike in Belgium, Spain and Portugal that will result in the cancellation of more than 300 flights. As a result, 50,000 Ryanair customers have been affected directly by the strike. The strike will start Wednesday 25 and will go until late Thursday. Ryanair sees no justification for the cabin crew strike and says they will achieve nothing but distort family holidays and promote competition. The airline says it pays good wages with good employment conditions.
The Belgian, Portuguese and Spanish trade unions will be on strike on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 July. As a preventive measure, Ryanair's management decided to cancel 300 flights in these two days:
- Cancellation of 200 daily flights to/from Spain
- Cancellation of 50 daily flights to/from Belgium
- Cancellation of 50 daily flights to/from Portugal
In total, almost 100,000 passengers across Europe (directly or indirectly) will be affected by these flight cancellations.
My Ryanair flight was cancelled or delayed, can I be compensated?
Did you know that the European Regulation EC 261/2004 is there to protect passengers?
According to our legal team, "The right to compensation depends on the nature of the strike. If the strike is independent of the airline, for example an air traffic controller strike, passengers cannot be compensated. On the other hand, if the strike depends on the airline, such as a strike by Ryanair's cabin crew, it is likely that air passengers will be compensated. In addition to compensation, passengers may be cancelled and reimbursed for their airline ticket if the airline has not offered them a replacement flight".
How much compensation could I receive for my Ryanair cancelled flight?
As established by the regulation, the distance covered by your flight's route will determine the amount that you’ll receive as compensation for your cancelled flight. The following amounts are stipulated in Regulation EC 261/2004:
- For all flights of 1,500 kilometres or less, EUR 250 (up to GBP 220)
- For all intra-Community flights of more than 1,500 kilometres and for all other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometres, EUR 400 (up to GBP 350)
- For all other flights (routes covering a distance greater than 3,500 kilometres) you'll be entitled to receive EUR 600 (up to 530)
