Ryanair and Vueling strikes in Italy — how to claim compensation
Tuesday, September 27, 2022
Italian flight attendants from Ryanair and Vueling will go on strike on October 1st. The Ryanair strike in Italy will run for 24 hours, and the Vueling strike in Italy will last for 4 hours, from 13:00 to 17:00. If you are affected by a Ryanair or Vueling flight delay or cancellation, you are likely eligible for flight compensation.
Why Ryanair and Vueling are striking
In response to substandard working conditions, employees at Ryanair and Vueling are on strike. The demonstrations are akin to those that took place in June and July of this year.
The unions Italian Filt Cgil and Uiltrasporti have clearly stated their belief that Italian employees deserve contracts that ensure appropriate working conditions and pay at least in line with the minimum earnings outlined in Italy’s national air transportation contract.
Additionally, the unions claim that proper discussions on the actual issues that the employees face have yet to take place following the strikes in June and July. At its base in Rome-Fiumicino, Vueling recently fired 17 of 120 flight attendants, a move that was criticized by the unions.
Will flights be cancelled?
Ryanair promises there won't be any cancellations — however, this is somewhat unlikely.
Vueling has not yet addressed the possibility of flight cancellations due to the strike in Italy.
Even in the case of a strike, flights are guaranteed per Italian civil aviation laws between the hours of 7:00 and 10:00 and 18:00 and 21:00. Nevertheless, airlines may have to reschedule some flights.
Am I entitled to compensation?
Was your flight cancelled at the last minute because of the Ryanair or Vueling strike in Italy? Then the European regulation EU261 guarantees you the right to flight compensation.
The amount of compensation depends on the flight distance.
For flights shorter than 1,500 km, the compensation is £220.
For flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, the compensation is £350.
For flights of over 1,500 kilometres within the EU, the compensation is also £350.
For flights of over 3,500 kilometres outside of the EU, the compensation is £520 —but if your flight was delayed by fewer than 4 hours, the total amount might be reduced by 50%.
You might also be eligible for a flight refund, alongside the aforementioned flight compensation. To be eligible for Ryanair flight refund or Vueling flight refund your situation must meet one of the following conditions:
- You were not offered an alternative flight by your airline
OR
- You were offered an alternative flight but declined the offer
